Soon, our second exposition in our new project room will take place!
«UNTER DEM BAUM»
Ksenia Galiaeva
Opening: friday May 18th, 2012, 18:00
Open until June 22nd, 2012
Along with being a photo gallery, the ICM will also feature four different exhibitions over the course of this year in it's new project room. Artists and photographers will be invited to prepare a show that relates to the ICM in some way. Our second guest is Ksenia Galiaeva (Russia, 1976).
In short, Galiaeva's work is about the friction between individual time awareness and real time. As a metaphor for this, she has been portraying her family in and around their countryhouse in Russia for years. Most of the photographs have been take spontaneously and are both humoristic and absurd. Thanks to the way she portrays her subjects, she grants them an universal distinguishability and as opposed to in family albums, she found a way to bypass the pitfalls of nostalgia. Aware she'll have to abandon the subject of her family at some point, she complements her photographic work with references to classical photography, painting and literature. More about this can be read in her essay "Time, Duration, Perception..." (2011) on her website www.kseniagaliaeva.com
She has recently returned from a three month trip to Japan, where she has been experimenting with non-lineair forms of narration, inspired by the tradition of Japanese folding screens. In and around the ICMs projectroom, the results will be shown.

«UNTER DEM BAUM»
Johannes Schwartz / Anna de Jong
Opening: Friday, March 16th, 18:45 (as part of the Haarlemse Lente)
Open until April 21st, 2012
Along with being a photo gallery, the ICM will also feature four different exhibitions over the course of this year in it's new project room. Artists and photographers will be invited to prepare a show that relates to the ICM in some way. Our first invitees will be Johannes Schwartz and Anna de Jong. Schwartz, one of the Dutch delegates for last year's Biënnale in Venice, is inspired by product catalogues for German forges, titled Fenster, Gitter und Türen. Copying and pasting, he creates his own illusionary interiors. An absurdustic kind of architecture, where stairs, rails and balconies play with the laws of perspective. Anna de Jong, who graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in 2010, is one of Schwartz' former students and focuses on idealistic types of architecture. The kind that functions on the drawing board, but fails to prove it's sustainability after realisation. She recently made a trip to London, to study and photograph the Barbican Centre, where deterioration is all too obvious and where there's little incentive to combat nature anymore. Anna has been searching the ICM's archives for comparable images from earlier centuries; architecture and ruins as a historic counterweight.
